ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to determine the frequent post insertion complaints associated with complete denture. This cross sectional study was done on 117 patients wearing complete dentures who came to the Department of Prosthodontics of Dow International Dental College with post insertion complaints from January to December 2017. These patients came for the first visit within the first month after the insertion of complete denture. The assessment of all post-insertion complaints was done by one prosthodontist. The questionnaire included information on age, gender, type of denture, chief complaint and place where the denture was fabricated. This was followed by a clinical examination. Patients were informed about the study. After obtaining consent the data were collected. Regarding the post insertion complaint, 75% of patients faced pain and discomfort. 65% reported difficulty in eating. Looseness of denture was reported by 58%. 35% experienced difficulty in speech complaints regarding food accumulation under and around the prosthesis were reported by 17%. The most common post-insertion complaint of complete denture was pain and discomfort followed by difficulty in eating. Identification of post insertion complaints in different types of prosthesis would be very supportive to developing strategies to prevent and manage these more effectively by reducing all negative factors associated with these complains

ABSTRACT

Stress is a vulnerable state to cellular homeostasis which leads to oxidative damage via free radical generation. The acute stress induces alteration in antioxidant enzyme activities to an extent which produce oxidative stress and causes certain pathological conditions. The use of Nigella sativa L. oil [NSO] in folk medicine has increased throughout the world for the prevention or treatment of various ailments because of potent antioxidant properties. In the present study, potential therapeutic effects of NSO on memory in both unrestrained and 2h restrained rats were observed. Shortterm memory [STM] and long-term memory [LTM] were assessed by elevated plus maze [EPM] and Morris water maze [MWM] respectively. The present study also demonstrated the effect of NSO on lipid peroxidation [LPO] and activities of antioxidant enzymes [superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase] along with the activity of acetyl cholinesterase [AChE]. The results obtained from the present study showed that 2h restraint stress significantly enhanced both short-term memory [p<0.01] and long-term memory [p<0.05] in rats. Pretreatment with NSO at a dose of 0.2ml/kg/day also significantly improved STM [p<0.05] in restrained rats and LTM [p<0.01] in unrestrained rats. This study also showed significantly decreased [p<0.01] LPO and significantly increased [p<0.01] endogenous antioxidant enzymes activity in NSO treated restrained rats. Similarly significant decreased [p<0.01] AChE activity was also observed in NSO treated unrestrained and 2h restrained rats. Therefore, current findings suggested that repeated administration of NSO may exert memory enhancing effects against restrained stress and it can be used for therapeutic purpose because of having fewer side effects

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to survey the impression technique used by the dental professionals of different institutes. Impression making is an important step in fabricating complete dentures. An impression is an imprint produced by existence of pressure of one thing into another surface. And this indicate an active role not a passive one and the clinician should understand that impressions are made, not taken. Mucostatic or passive impression was first proposed by Richardson and later popularized by Henry Page. A survey was conducted in dental colleges to get to know about the impression techniques and impression material used by the dental surgeons. It is discouraging to know that 35% of dental surgeons are using base plate custom trays to record secondary impressions. 10% are still using the alginate for secondary impressions. A supportable technique for recording full denture impressions is put forwarded for impression

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to evaluate the shade matching ability of dental professionals by testing of color blindness assessment using Ishihara color Blindness 14- plate test by using vita pan shade guide under two light sources. Five groups [20 each] of dental students, dental practitioners, dental interns, prosthodontists, and dental technicians participated. All of them were analyzed by Ishihara color blindness test comprising of 24 plates. The groups were asked to match shade of three artificial maxillary right central incisors by Visual method, using Vita pan shade guide and Vita tooth Guide 3D - Master [Vita Zan Fabrik]. The prosthodontists and dental students showed the highest correct shade matching under yellow light, while dental interns showed the highest correct shade matching under day light. It was concluded that visual method shade matching is preferable under yellow light by relying on prosthodontists and dental students

ABSTRACT

Smokeless tobacco is one of that cause of oral disease and especially in Pakistan and India. Objective this study was to determine the prevalence of smokeless tobacco use and the association with tooth loss and oral health in patients coming Dow University of Health Sciences Karachi, Pakistan. 256 patients of age above 18 years were studied in outpatient department of oral diagnosis at Dow University of Health and sciences Karachi. The participants were clinically examined in two different groups according to exposure of smokeless tobacco. The oral health problems found among the participants were gingival recession [72%], tooth loss including tooth wear loss [68%] and missing teeth [60%]. However, there were significant association between smokeless tobacco and gingival re-cession, tooth wear and edentulousness, as a result P-value obtained less than 0.05 on chi-square test. Furthermore odds ratio revealed that people who used smokeless tobacco had 4 times more chances to have tooth loss and 3 times more chances to have gingival recession than those people who don't use smokeless tobacco. It was concluded that those who chew smokeless tobacco are more likely to have missing teeth, attrition and gingival recession

ABSTRACT

The present study concerns the effectiveness of a selective 5-hydroxytryptamine [5-HT] -1A receptor agonist 8- hydroxy-2-[di-n-propylamino] tetralin [8-OH-DPAT] in long term sugar diet treated rats. Male albino wistar rats were divided into control and test groups. Test animals were given sugar [5 g/10ml water] orally for three weeks. Food intakes and body weight of all rats were measured weekly. After three weeks control and test animals were further divided into two groups i.e. saline injected and drug injected. 8-OH-DPAT at a dose of 0.25mg/kg was injected to a group of normal diet treated and another group of sugar diet treated rats. Other two groups were injected with saline. 5-HT syndrome and food intakes at 2h and 4h were monitored. Then animals were decapitated to collect brain samples for the estimation of 5-HT and 5-hydroxyindole acetic acid [5-HIAA] levels by HPLC-EC method. We observed that weekly cumulative food intakes increased and body weights decreased in sugar diet treated rats. 8-OH-DPAT produced hyperactivity syndrome in both control and sugar treated rats. But these values were smaller in sugar diet than normal diet treated rats. Hyperphagic effects of 8- OH-DPAT were greater in normal diet than sugar diet treated rats. 5-HT and 5-HIAA levels were not altered. The results suggesting a desensitization of pre as well as postsynaptic 5-HT-1A receptors in rats treated with sugar diet are discussed in the context of a role of sugar diet in the precipitation of obesity and other neuropsychiatric illnesses
